In January 2001, we were expecting our second child. We were traversing through the usual expectant parents’ motions (nursery prep, maternity leave approval, conversations with our 6 year old, and both working full time). Unfortunately, our excitement and anticipation quickly turned to anxiety and uncertainty.
An unfortunate incident delivered us to the doors of our local pediatric emergency room. It was there that we learned of the very distinct possibility that our baby would be born three months premature at just 3 pounds. Through the tireless efforts of the hospital staff and visiting nurses, we were blessed to become parents again 9 weeks later to our second son.
Our medical tribulations did not end there with him. The past 19 years have brought challenges, but with each one, our mindset of wanting to give back and help others has grown deeper. Hence the formation of Draf10 Motorsports Inc. ™ and the Draf10 Foundation. NASCAR’s only not for profit race team.
Draf10 Motorsports started out as a dream to help the people who risk everything to save those they don't even know. Through hard work, pure New York stubbornness and a desire to help, NASCAR's first and only non for profit team was born. The goal is simple, using money earned from race winnings and generous sponsorship from companies that believe in our causes, we want to give back to those quiet heroes who gave everything to protect us.
With more than a few family and friends in both the FDNY, NYPD and local volunteer departments, we understand the risk involved every time our loved ones run out the door. We know the stress and worry of not knowing if our loved ones will come home uninjured or even alive. For Firefighters, Police Officers, First Responders, just to name a few; it is not just a career, it is a calling – a calling to help strangers in what is most often a terrifying moment in their lives. We also know that too many have made the ultimate sacrifice for the communities they love. Like the 343 members of the FDNY who, without hesitation, ran into the unknown on 9/11 for people they didn't know.
These men and women give everything, and Draf10 Motorsports refuses to let them go unnoticed when they give that sacrifice. We will remember those lost when the towers fell, we will remember those who pass from injuries and illness caused by that terror attack and we will remember those we have lost since.
Since our initial formation, we have been honored to form a partnership with another racing organization that shares in our core beliefs of helping others…FDNY Racing.
For Draf10 Motorsports and FDNY Racing there is more to racing than just winning. Through our deep rooted passion for the sport of NASCAR we can help others…one lap at a time.
FDNY Racing can trace its history back to the late 1960's when Jim Rosenblum decided to get into the exciting world of stockcar racing. It wasn't until that fateful day in September 2001 that the direction of his team changed. Angered by millions of dollars donated to causes being eaten up lawyers and overpaid board members, Mr. Rosenblum, with permission from the city of New York, changed the name of his race team from Rosenblum Racing to FDNY Racing. He also made sure any money the team made went straight to the Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows & Children's Fund, as it still is today.
He also brought in both past and current members of both the FDNY and NYPD who volunteer their time to ensure the team preforms on the racetrack. This team is unique on how they determine success.
In racing, success is usually measured by a team’s on track performance. Corporate sponsorships, media attention, and merchandise sales all coincide with a team’s race accomplishments. Should a team’s finishing position be the only metric used in determining a team’s success?
Not according to the definition of success, a definition that states it is the accomplishment of an aim or a purpose or the achievement of desired visions and planned goals.
FDNY Racing, when viewed using the usual parameters of where it finished in a race, does not appear at first look to be successful at all. On the contrary though, the team has been extremely successful, accomplishing its purpose and attaining the goals for which it was formed.
FDNY Racing was not formed with the purpose of winning races and championships. It was formed to give back, to help others, and so that no one would ever forget the sacrifices made on September 11th, 2001. The team has never had the commonplace assets as are the norm in NASCAR racing. No engineers, no professional pit crew, no state of the art equipment; but what they might lack in tangible assets, they make up for tenfold with honor and dedication. FDNY Racing has been an integral part in raising funds for our nation’s fallen first responders, those we tragically lost on 9/11 and their brothers and sisters that have sacrificed their lives since.
“Dedication – Duty – Honor – Courage”
These are not just words to the members of the team – IT’S CODE. These four words are the basis for the hard work and determination to get their truck on the track.
With Mr. Rosenblum's team and NASCAR's Drive for Diversity Program Pit Crew, Draf10 Motorsports is ready to become a serious contender in the NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series.
